I was involved in a brief foot chase which lead to a bit of a scrap and an unpleasant struggle on the floor in which the suspect tried to relieve me of an eye! In between bouts I’d managed to radio to control for assistance but immediately after my ear piece was pulled out so I had no idea if my message had been received clearly or at all.
During this struggle I’d become acutely aware of people starting to film the altercation. It was at this point I heard a female voice shout “somebody help him” although at this stage I didn’t know if they were referring to me or the suspect!
To my enormous relief two female members of the public got down on their knees either side of me and assisted in restraining the suspect. One asked what else she could do to help and I managed to blurt out that I needed my ear piece. She found it and very helpfully returned it to my ear where I could hear units were on the way.
The two ladies stayed put until the cavalry arrived and then carried on with their journey not waiting for a thank you or anything!
I hope that they get to read this message so that they can know how much I appreciate their help in what was a difficult struggle. They stepped in with no PPE and no thought for their personal safety and I cannot thank them enough for their help!
Also a big thanks to all my colleagues who tipped out and allowed me to catch my breath!
Much love, your local BTP officer!
