A bad boy had been apprehended for various Road Traffic Offences and was due to appear at court the following day, before being held to the next day to appear at another court on a warrant. He knew he was going to jail for while. During the Road Traffic matters he had crashed a car and injured himself, banging his chest on the steering wheel. He was taken and kept overnight at the local hospital, in a private room on 5th floor.

I relieved the night shift, who had been sat outside his room in a big comfy chair, reading the paper, so I took up the same spot. 15 stone of young Police officer blocking his only escape. The nightshift had warned me to watch him, as he had got dressed early in the morning. I popped in and out every 10 minutes or so, even shared the paper with him, and he seemed alright.

About 5 minutes after I had last checked on him, a guy came running up the corridor.

“HAVE YOU GOT SOMEONE IN THERE OFFICER?”

“YES?” was my, obvious reply.

“HE’S OUT THE WINDOW!”

To my amazement, I ran in the room and observed the “secure” window fully opened, and 5 sheets tied together, to the radiator, dropping out the window. Outside there was a smashed window at the ground floor level where the chap had smashed a window to get in the building and make good his escape.

Somewhat embarrassed, and scared, I radioed in to the control room…….

“WHAT IS THE PRISONER’S NAME?” I was asked….

“I DON’T KNOW…” was my reply, ’cause I didn’t know – no one had told me.

“WHAT’S HE WEARING?”

“………… I DON’T KNOW.” Well, I hadn’t paid particular attention to what he was wearing as I hadn’t expected him to climb out the 5th floor window!!!!

A huge search was carried out but he had made good his escape.

A member of the nursing staff (obviously) contacted the press and the following day The Sun ran a story with the headline….

“OH SHEET”…………….
